A broadband awareness initiative

Tasmanian Broadband Development Program (TBDP)

As a State Government strategic initiative the Tasmanian Broadband Development Program plans to address a range of issues associated with enabling all Tasmanians to access affordable high speed broadband services.

The Tasmanian Broadband Development Program is a key component of the government's overall strategy to increase affordable access to broadband for all Tasmanians and help position the State as a strong participant in the digital economy.

This aligns with the Tasmanian Premier's vision of a “Clever, Kind and Connected” State.

The Department of Economic Development, Tourism and the Arts (DEDTA) is contributing towards the government's strategic telecommunications objectives for the State through the implementation of the Tasmanian Broadband Development Program.

Under the Australian Government's Broadband Development Network, DEDTA, in conjunction with the Tasmanian Electronic Commerce Centre (TECC), will be collaborating with local government in ensuring that the State's broadband priorities are progressed at the regional and community level.

As the Tasmanian Government commercialises its optic fibre network, the potential exists to extend high and very-high capacity broadband services across regional Tasmania. This will open up tremendous development opportunities for the State's local government sector and compliments the Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT) objectives.

The TBDP team is working closely with State councils to facilitate standardising Planning and Development telecommunication guidelines, revolving around new installation and development projects. The program has particular focus on working with Tasmanian Councils to leverage competitive telecommunications infrastructure in areas previously overlooked by the market and past Federal initiatives.

The Tasmanian Broadband Development Program (TBDP) Project Manager, Dr David Anderson from DEDT and Mark Carrington, (TBDP) Project Officer from the TECC, have been presenting to various Council delegates thru out the State, discussing the potential opportunities for local government to progress broadband development within the State's regions and communities.

Projects

Through this three year program the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and the Arts has instigated an awareness campaign across the States industry and the general community to help raise the level of understanding concerning the benefits of broadband. Whilst Tasmanian lags behind other states; through this program and your participation, we aim to excel by 2010.
